- Verticality: Ensure the column is perfectly upright so the condensed liquid flows smoothly down the helix spirals without pooling.
- Insulation: For very precise separations, wrap the exterior of the 200 mm cylinder in glass wool or aluminium foil to maintain a steady temperature gradient inside the helix.
- Clamping: Use a chain clamp or a large three-prong clamp to secure the column to a retort stand, as the internal glass helix makes it slightly heavier than a plain tube.
