A Pocket Thermometer Adapter (often called a Thermometer Pocket or Well) protects the thermometer from acidic solutions by acting as a physical barrier. Unlike a standard compression adapter that leaves the thermometer bulb exposed to the liquid or vapor, a pocket adapter is a sealed glass tube.

How it works:
  1. Isolation: The thermometer is placed inside a thin-walled, closed-bottom glass tube that is built into a ground joint. The thermometer never actually touches the acid.
  2. Corrosion Resistance: Because the pocket is made of 3.3 Borosilicate Glass, it can sit in highly concentrated acids (like sulfuric or hydrochloric acid) that would otherwise destroy the metal sensors or markings on a thermometer.
  3. Thermal Transfer: To ensure the thermometer reads accurately through the glass wall, a heat transfer medium (like a small amount of silicone oil or glycerin) is often added inside the pocket before inserting the thermometer.
Steps to Use:
  • Step 1: Select the correct joint size (usually 14/23 or 19/26) to match your flask.
  • Step 2: Ensure the pocket is clean and dry. If the reaction is high-temperature, add a few drops of thermally conductive oil to the bottom of the pocket.
  • Step 3: Insert the thermometer into the pocket.
  • Step 4: Secure the adapter into the flask. The glass pocket now takes the "hit" from the acid, keeping your expensive thermometer safe and clean.

This glass adapter is designed to fit standard pocket thermometers into jointed flask assemblies, supporting B14, B19 and B24 flask sizes. It provides a secure, sealed connection for monitoring liquids, distillations and heating applications with precision. Made from high quality borosilicate glass, the adapter offers excellent thermal and chemical resistance. The jointed design provides a tight fit to both the thermometer adapter and flask, reducing the risk of leaks, contamination or heat loss during experiments.
